Why is the Langstroth hive the most popular?

With all the styles of beehives available on the internet, why do the majority of beekeeping instructors still suggest that beginners start with vertically stacking Langstroth? If not the wooden Langstroth, then styrofoam or plastic versions of the same basic design?
The Langstroth has been in use for 170 years although during that time period, many hive designs have been tried but most have been discarded in favor of the Langstroth. Why has the Langstroth lasted so long?
First, the stacking Langstroth hive conserves heat with its ‘blockiness’. Stacks of two deep boxes or three ‘western’ depth boxes have proven over centuries of use to be a workable volume to hold sufficient bees and sufficient stores to overwinter in the northern temperate zone, including in Western WA. During winters, heat rises and when stopped by inner and outer covers, particularly if those are insulated, and that reduces the energy need for heat production by bees in cluster.

A second major reason Langstroth remains the most popular hive design is its modularity. Parts off one hive stack can be placed on another. Parts and accessories are interchangeable and readily available. Advice on how to keep bees in Langstroth is also readily available.
